What is corrosion?

When a metal corrodes, it breaks down due to chemical reactions caused by the surrounding environment. This manifests itself in the form of a porous, brown and flaky surface that deteriorates the metal's properties. The first step in the corrosion process is the formation of a thin film of oxide or sulphide on the surface of the metal. If this layer is broken, the underlying metal risks being exposed and corroding rapidly. Therefore, it is important to protect metal equipment and components so that they are not destroyed by corrosion.
